AFIS Cyprus Ltd was established in 2007 on the initiative of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (СССI) on the basis of Law 185(I)/2011 and especially of the Regulations of the Cyprus Legislative Decree 125/09, the Cyprus Legislative Decree 79/2012 and the Cyprus Legislative Decree 56/2016 and is a Non-Profit Organization. It is the first and only licensed Collective Waste Management System for portable batteries and accumulators in Cyprus. The System was licensed for the first time on 1st April 2009 and is subject to renewal of its license every six years, subject to approval by the Competent Authority of Cyprus, which is the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment.
Shareholders and Members of the System are battery companies (importers), which are obligated by law to manage in an environmentally sound manner the batteries they sell on the Cyprus market when they reach the end of their life and become waste. Companies that import appliances with built-in batteries (rechargeable or disposable) are also obligated to manage batteries.
Since its establishment, AFIS has set up a Board of Directors and entered into a cooperation agreement with Green Dot (Cyprus) Public Co Ltd for the administration, organization and operation of the System.
